Tips for Cooking with a Recipe

Nowadays people eat a lot of foods that are prepared. Here are a few tips that will get you started if you are interested in preparing recipes at home and are on a frugal budget. To get started, you can pick up a few cookbooks or recipes for that matter.

Cookbooks will provide you with the instructions for different dishes and will help ease the confusion. Most cookbooks give you step by step instructions from selecting the required ingredients to how to cook the dish.

When you use cookbooks, all you need to do is buy the ingredients to prepare the recipe. Even though cookbooks provide step by step instructions, some people find it difficult to follow a recipe and they are some who follow the recipe and get results which are not very good and then they are others who are just plain stumped even before they get to prepare the dish.

Below are tips that will help you be the best cook you can possible be when preparing recipes at home.

Tip #1

You need to learn the terms used in cooking.

For some people, recipes are not easy to follow even if they are given instructions. The reason this happens is because some cookbooks use terms that are only used by professionals.

Some words like saute, dice, cube, dough, might be totally foreign to someone who has never cooked.

If you are unfamiliar with the words in a recipe, it is a good idea to look them up in a dictionary. If you look up a word, you will know what it means before you move forward. So, this will alleviate some of the stress if you tend to panic when you see a term that you do not understand. I can assure you that your dictionary will be very helpful because all the words will be in there.

Another thing that you can do so that you are not intimidated is to borrow or buy cookbooks that are specifically made for people who have very little experience cooking. You might also want to look for cookbooks that provide illustrations and explanations for the terms used. As mentioned before, you can buy cookbooks that are very easy to use and are made for beginner cooks who are interest in making recipes for home.

Tip #2

The next thing that you need to do is have the tools that are necessary to do the job.  For example, you will need measuring spoons, saucepans, knives etcetera.

If you do not measure your ingredients, your dish will not turn out the way it was intended. In other words, your dish might be too salt or the taste might be off.   If you add to much salt, your dish will be salty.  If you add too much sugar, you dish will be too sweet.  If you do not add the flavouring in the right quantity, your dish will be very bland. So, it is imperative that you have all the measuring tools.

Tip #3

Take a slow approach.

Trying to cook too fast will not get you good result either. In other words, if your recipe indicate that the meals will take an hour to cook, don’t think that you will be able to do it in 20 minutes. If you don’t cook you meals in the recommended time, the quality of your food will not be what it should have been. For example, meat might be too tough if you undercook it.

The reverse is also true.  If you overcook your food, it will not taste like it should have. This is the reason why a kitchen timer is another tool that you need if you are going to attempt to cook.  Either a kitchen timer or a clock in the kitchen is a good idea. If you use a kitchen timer, you can set it and it will remind you when you should go back to the food. You might also want to increase the the lead time.  An example would be to add another half hour to forty-five minutes to the time required to cook the food. If the recipe book says 1 hour, then allot 30 minutes or more.  Hurrying your food, will only means that it will not turn out the way it should have.

Cooking easy to make recipes at home can be very rewarding and you family will really enjoy the meals that you prepare for them.  Another benefit is that you will save money because buying prepared foods is very expensive.
