As the cost of fuel is increasing, you might think that you will not be able to go on vacation. The fact is that there is absolutely no truth to this because there are ways that you can decrease your travel costs not only at home but abroad. How to start saving money on travel?

Travel Off Season

The first thing that you can do to decrease your travel cost is to travel during the off season.

Colorada might not be appealing in August as Barbados is in February but you will not be able to beat the hotel rates. What you have to do is to travel during the off season. If you do this, you will not only save money but you will avoid the crowds during the peak seasons. Take a last minute trip in summer to ski resorts such as like Lake Tahoe, Vail, and Sun Valley. They are very gorgeous during this time.

Nowadays, you don’t even have to go to a travel agent to find out if there are last minute deals. There are many websites which specialize in these types of deals so you can go online to do your own research. You can check out hotel deals, cruises and vacation packages among other things. You might want to sign up for email notifications at your favorite travel sites. You might also want to try¬†a site that compare fares if you don’t want to do your own research, and let somebody else do the leg work for you!

Use Your Air Miles

You might also want to sign up for credit cards that offer air miles for every dollar that you spend on your purchases. So, you will accummulate credits over time that you can save for tickets, hotels or packages. Just remember that freebies are only free if you don’t have to pay extras for them. In other words, if you put your trip on your credit card, it is wise to pay it off when you receive the bill because if you have to pay interest on your trip, you would have wasted any savings you got from the credits you received.

Go Camping

A lot of people do not know that in the U.S.A. there are over 10,000 campgrounds which are inexpensive. You can save on your camping trip by renting or borrowing equipment and also by doing your own cooking. Camping is a very cheap way to have a vacation and not to mention that it has become very trendy. If the thought of camping out in a tent does not appeal to you, some of the parks offer cabins.

Stay Home

You don’t have to go away to have an enjoyable vacation. There are many things that you can do in your own city. You might also be able to find hotel discounts in your city due to the current economic situation. A lot of tourist attractions and amusement parks offer specials and discounts so call them to ask about specials that they have. Just think how far your vacation dollars will go if you do the research.

Swap Houses

Swapping houses is another good ideas to save on vacations. If you have friends or family in another city or country, you could exchange homes with them. There are some websites where you can swap homes with like minded people. Two such websites is Homeexchange.com or Homeforswap.com which provide this type of service so check them out.

Do you still think that you can’t afford a vacation this summer? Check out some of the ideas above and I am sure you will find something that interest you. There are many discounts and deals that you can take advantage of. You just have to find what is available this summer that can save money.
